Speaker Bio

Musgrave was selected as a scientist-astronaut by NASA in August 1967. A veteran of six spaceflights, he has spent a total of 1,281 hours, 59 minutes, 22 seconds in space. He performed the first shuttle spacewalk on Challenger’s first flight, was a pilot on an astronomy mission, conducted two classified DOD missions, was the lead spacewalker on the Hubble Telescope repair mission and operated an electronic chip manufacturing satellite on Columbia. He also served as the communicator in mission control for 25 missions.

After serving with the U.S. Marines, Musgrave obtained six degrees in math, computers, chemistry, medicine, physiology and literature. He has written 25 scientific papers in the areas of aerospace medicine and physiology, temperature regulation, exercise physiology, and clinical surgery. He was a part-time trauma surgeon for the duration his astronaut career.

Today he is a producer/director of multimedia, a landscape architect, an innovator with Applied Minds, Inc., and a professor of design at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA.
